Bernstein, the son of immigrants, spent his childhood and early youth primarily in Massachusetts. His love of music contradicted with his father’s wishes for his future: but Bernstein’s musical genius was too strong. His first piano lessons, and early signs of composition and conducting prowess, begin during these formative years.
