Emotional intensity explodes from the orchestra in Stravinsky’s Firebird. This magical tale of a glowing bird features vibrant flashes of orchestral color. Barber’s Violin Concerto is at once gorgeous and powerful, making its pyrotechnics the perfect companion to Firebird. Described as “monstrously talented,” soloist Benjamin Beilman joins guest conductor Larry Rachleff in this program filled with intensity and virtuosity. We salute American icon Leonard Bernstein on his 100th birthday year with Symphonic Dances from his popular musical, West Side Story. Berlioz’s innovative Roman Carnival Overture is a vibrant opening for this electrifying concert.
