The 1900s were Leonard Bernstein’s century. He took possession of it with curiosity, a zest for life and an amazing degree of musicality. Besides conducting in Boston, Tel Aviv, London and New York, he wrote musicals, film music and operas, and became a big name on Broadway where West Side Story was a huge success and quickly spread all over the world. The charming, smiling Bernstein appeared at cocktail parties, on television, in the entertainment pages in newspapers and was part of the celebrity crowd. Everybody wanted to be around Bernstein! In 2018, there will be celebrations to mark his 100th birthday and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra will provide the entertainment for the event with musical gems like Maria from West Side Story, New York, New York from On the Town and Glitter and Be Gay from Candide.
